Original creations by Debi Lynn Designs® adorn celebrities, accessorize fashion runways, and fill a wide variety of magazines. We love Debi Mattingly’s work, personality and insight, and we are very excited to share what she has to say about her inspiration, drool-worthy work space and more. Enjoy!

Where do you find your inspiration?
Everywhere I look…. but, mainly finding unusual beads and findings from around the world that have a history and a certain style & look that is a part of my “branding” and what I have become known for.  The “search” for the treasure and discovering it is my greatest inspiration.

I grew up on the beautiful bayous of Louisiana and as a Cajun and Muskogee Creek Native American, my cultures have had a HUGE impact on my designs…. and always will.

What is your work space like?
Wow…I have been blessed to have 2 studios!  One is where my staff works on the orders as they come in; and the other is my guest house off of our home.  Both of these studios are set up quite different.  The one where my staff creates is a place where everything is in “order”, where materials can easily be found and readily available for production.

My studio at home is more of my “design studio”; where I am able to work when the “creative juices” need to flow.  I have to have “space” where it is only me, my music and my treasures around me in order to create.  Everything in my “design studio” is there for “inspiration”….from beads, to art, to old antiques and other found treasures throughout my travels.

I have been a professional designer since 1979 and trust me it has not always been this way!  I remember for years designing on the bedroom floor and kitchen table….so, it really doesn’t matter where you design and create; just make it a place where you feel the most inspired and have treasures around you that make the creative process fun!

What does your team consist of?
1. I have a PR firm out of LA that takes care of all my press, celebrities & stylists
2. I have a marketing firm in New Mexico that take care of the marketing of the designs
3. I have a professional photographer and web designer that takes care of the photo shoots
4. And I have a great rep that take my designs to market all over the US

As you can see it takes a “full team” of professionals to truly make your business “work”!

Any tricks of the trade you care to share?
There really are no “tricks” to speak of.  The techniques that we all use as designers are not new, they were created by the Masters of long ago… we just have new “materials” to help make it easier to create the pieces.  I have always been willing to help other designers and artists learn techniques and give information on what has worked for me over the last 30 years and what hasn’t.  But, we cannot teach what you carry within yourself…. we can only teach techniques and give inspiration.

The main thing to remember as an artist/designer is to be true to one’s own style.  Although there is nothing really “new” to design that has not already been done….always make sure that you learn to “make it your own”.  There is a HUGE difference in being a “designer” and a “jewelry maker”, and if you want to make a living at designing than you must be willing to continue learning and going forward in your work; while making sure to stay true to your “branding style”.  Keep your eye on the trends, but manage to stay ahead of them.

What are you working on now?
I have several national magazines interested in doing a story on my work, so am in the middle of designing several new pieces for that.  I also have several shoots coming up with some celebrities that have requested certain looks and of course I have market coming up in January for my “resale” line….so, never a dull moment in the studio!

If you were a bead, what would you be?
What a great question!!!  I would be made of rustic metal, very old, and rare.

 Any additional advice?
No matter what a person dreams of being …. I say “go for it”; it is never too late!

“Bead a Turkey” Contest!

1

Category : Beads, Beads, Beads, Cool Contests & Events

I took a bunch of beads that were laying around on my work table and arranged them in the shape of a turkey. I know my turkey isn’t very beautiful, nor is it very artistic, but that wasn’t my intention.  This is a contest… the objective here is to take some beads you have laying around and make your own turkey!  It’s pretty easy, no glue, no stringing, just make a cute turkey. When you’re finished take a really good picture of your turkey and email it to us at: contest@happymangobeads.com.  We will display your turkey in a special photo album on Happy Mango Beads facebook page and on Thanksgiving Day, Nov 24th, those photos will be judged (based on creativity) and the winner will get all of the beads that you see pictured here in our turkey.  Included are: turquoise, amber, glass, carnelian, several little old trade beads and a large agate slab bead.  We wish you and your family a very Happy Thanksgiving!  Now hurry, get busy and BEAD A TURKEY!

A Collection of Bead Poetry

Category : Meanderings

A collection of bead poetry, by none other than Happy Mango Beads Facebook fans! Rudi began with a single line, “I was in Bangkok searching for a bead…” and the rhyming ensued. We still need your help titling all of these fun poems. Please comment with your title suggestions. Let the fun continue!

“A child in need starts with one bead” by Joan Hewett
I was in Bangkok looking for beads,
but I wasn’t sure where to find my leads.
I looked through the stalls to find the right ones,
but my eyes were captured by the young ones.
And at that moment no bead would suffice,
to help these dear children, who had so many plights.
I did what I could to assuage their needs,
and so there in Bangkok, I had reaped more than beads.

I was in Bangkok searching for a bead,
But my mouth was hungry, and my belly needing to feed.
A dude came and asked me hey, what do you need?
When he offered me Pad Thai I paid them no heed…
Som Tam please! And would you be so kind as to give me a bead lead?
A man walked up and said “I’ve got a lead”. Go get some beads at a shop called Mango,
You can step right in and do the tango!

I was in Bangkok searching for a bead.
I know I’ll find a bead for my every need,
but stick to the budget I thought we agreed!
Too many to choose and there isn’t one I want to lose…
Man, I think I need a little snooze, maybe than I can choose?
Nope, went home with all the beads and no shoes!

I was in Bangkok searching for a bead.
I saw something, and jumped off my trusty steed.
I took a look, my head I shook. Alas, it’s only a seed:
A seed is a seed but a bead is a bead, I thought to myself.
But wait – couldn’t a seed be a bead?
Yes indeed! And I found the most wonderful seed bead, yes sir indeed.

I was in Bangkok searching for a bead, I looked high and looked low but I found no real lead.
When a man from the market reached out his hand. Should I shake it?
Oh gosh, its not the custom in this land.
He looked at me gently and quietly said, “If you take this and keep it, it will show you the way.
It’s the people who make them, that’s who you will meet.
It’s the journey you’ll treasure, a memory to keep.”
So I reached out to accept the gift from this man and he set it so gently in my trembling hand.
I must have looked like a child on Christmas day.
Was it glass? Was it gold? How much will it weigh?
If beads are a passion then you’ll know this is true;
It will change as you watch it… sometime green sometimes blue.
This magical bead took me on a great carpet ride,
in the country, the city… no more could a bead hide,
They’re like children I think: love the bad, love the good, give them homes, keep them safe.
They will stay with you waiting, “Oh pick me” they will say,
By design they are faithful and just want to play.
So my story began 50 years ago, I picked my first paper bead up at an antiques show.
The bug, yeah it bit me and life’s just not the same,
so I wait for the next time when travel calls my name.
It might be rare or simply made from an old coconut,
but its the journey, the people, the thrill of the hunt.

I was in Bangkok searching for a bead…
I looked all around, there were none that met my need.
Continued to search no treasure to be found,
Suddenly a child with the treasured beads tightly bound.
As I approached in awe fear rose in his eyes, he ran away and was no where to be found.
My longing continues, the search never ends so I search out Happy Mango hoping my treasure will be found.

I was in Bangkok searching for a bead,
Seeking out something special to fit my need,
Looking for a place where I can go to buy awesome beads.
On the sidewalk was a peacock wishing me godspeed,
Then a voice in an alley said, “Lady, come with me.”
A million beads to meet my every need…
A box full of findings and a string of good thread.
Got everything I wanted and most of what I need.
I rushed to my toolbox:
I knew what to create with them, the tools did fly.
I got a vision with some bling in my eye!
