CONGRATULATIONS to Jessica Blacknall, the winner of all the beads in our anniversary cake!  Thank you everyone for participating in this contest.  It was fun reading all the comments.  We wish everyone could have won.  Thanks for helping us celebrate our 10th anniversary!

March 2012 marks the 10th anniversary of Happy Mango Beads.  We had collected beads for much longer than that, and even sold a few here and there, but it was 10 years ago that we decided to focus mainly on BEADS, and we’re sure glad we made that decision.  I remember when I built the first HMB website, it was so unprofessional!  Big goofy fonts, poor photography, no inventory control, ugh!  We didn’t get a single order in the first 2 months and I seriously considered canceling the website and giving up.  We were busy with our (other) import company at the time, but you see, I had a “thing” for beads.  Anyway, we owe our success to YOU, our customers. Thank you!

How would you like to win all the beads in our anniversary cake?  All you have to do is  comment below in ONE SHORT SENTENCE and tell us what you would do with all these beads.  On March 7th all names will go in a random generator and a winner will be chosen.  If you blog about this giveaway (and our anniversary) you get 3 entries!

Be sure to follow our anniversary celebration closely on Facebook and Twitter over the next week – we’ll have lots of giveaways, special deals, fun and excitement!

Tips for Tuesday

Category : Beading Tips

Today’s beading tips were provided by Linda Karpinski of Blue Monkey Beads

1) To guarantee same size loops when wire wrapping, draw a line with a sharpie on your round tip pliers. Then when you make your next loop, just line up your wire on the line.

2) To make sure your handmade ear wires are the same size, wrap both pieces of wire around a sharpie or other mandrel at the same time.

3) To file the ends of your wire smooth, use an emery board.

Win the Mardi Gras Beads!

February 21st is “Fat Tuesday” – the last day of the Mardi Gras celebration! Some of the most timeless traditions associated with Mardi Gras are the parades. These parades date back to the 1820′s, but the introduction of the strands of beads, which we now associate with the celebration, didn’t happen until the 1920′s. Can you imagine 100 years of Mardi Gras without the beads?! We have the Rex Parade to thank for beginning the tradition of tossing beads to parade watchers. The first beads used were actually strands of Czech-made glass beads. The beads were so popular that within a few years, inexpensive, mass-produced plastic beads were being manufactured to keep up with demand. Although these beads can be found in many different colors, the most predominant, and widely recognizable, are purple, green and gold, which are meant to represent justice, faith and power. In a retro-inspired twist, glass beads are again becoming a popular throw during Mardi Gras parades. When the crowds cry “Throw me something Mister!” there are more and more limited-edition, intricate and specially designed beads being thrown, along with handfuls of the plastic ones. These newer versions, along with the original Czech glass beads, are highly collectible!

WIN THESE BEADS! All you have to do is leave a comment below to be entered in our contest, and if you blog about our contest you’ll receive 2 entries (be sure to comment with a link to your blog). On the evening of February 24th we’ll draw a name and the winner will receive all the beads which are pictured below. Good luck and thanks for playing!

Have a Happy Mango of a Day!

I cannot write the word HAPPY without following it with the word MANGO. I cannot write Happy Birthday, Happy Easter, Happy Thanksgiving, NONE OF THEM! without first writing Happy Mango, then removing Mango and writing in the word I want.  Yesterday my granddaughter pointed out to me that I wrote Happy Mango in her Valentine’s card, oops!  I wonder how often I do that!  It’s like there’s no happy without mango.  I simply cannot control it.

Have a Happy Mango, oops!  I mean Happy Thursday!
