Original creations by Debi Lynn Designs® adorn celebrities, accessorize fashion runways, and fill a wide variety of magazines. We love Debi Mattingly’s work, personality and insight, and we are very excited to share what she has to say about her inspiration, drool-worthy work space and more. Enjoy!

Where do you find your inspiration?
Everywhere I look…. but, mainly finding unusual beads and findings from around the world that have a history and a certain style & look that is a part of my “branding” and what I have become known for.  The “search” for the treasure and discovering it is my greatest inspiration.

I grew up on the beautiful bayous of Louisiana and as a Cajun and Muskogee Creek Native American, my cultures have had a HUGE impact on my designs…. and always will.

What is your work space like?
Wow…I have been blessed to have 2 studios!  One is where my staff works on the orders as they come in; and the other is my guest house off of our home.  Both of these studios are set up quite different.  The one where my staff creates is a place where everything is in “order”, where materials can easily be found and readily available for production.

My studio at home is more of my “design studio”; where I am able to work when the “creative juices” need to flow.  I have to have “space” where it is only me, my music and my treasures around me in order to create.  Everything in my “design studio” is there for “inspiration”….from beads, to art, to old antiques and other found treasures throughout my travels.

I have been a professional designer since 1979 and trust me it has not always been this way!  I remember for years designing on the bedroom floor and kitchen table….so, it really doesn’t matter where you design and create; just make it a place where you feel the most inspired and have treasures around you that make the creative process fun!

What does your team consist of?
1. I have a PR firm out of LA that takes care of all my press, celebrities & stylists
2. I have a marketing firm in New Mexico that take care of the marketing of the designs
3. I have a professional photographer and web designer that takes care of the photo shoots
4. And I have a great rep that take my designs to market all over the US

As you can see it takes a “full team” of professionals to truly make your business “work”!

Any tricks of the trade you care to share?
There really are no “tricks” to speak of.  The techniques that we all use as designers are not new, they were created by the Masters of long ago… we just have new “materials” to help make it easier to create the pieces.  I have always been willing to help other designers and artists learn techniques and give information on what has worked for me over the last 30 years and what hasn’t.  But, we cannot teach what you carry within yourself…. we can only teach techniques and give inspiration.

The main thing to remember as an artist/designer is to be true to one’s own style.  Although there is nothing really “new” to design that has not already been done….always make sure that you learn to “make it your own”.  There is a HUGE difference in being a “designer” and a “jewelry maker”, and if you want to make a living at designing than you must be willing to continue learning and going forward in your work; while making sure to stay true to your “branding style”.  Keep your eye on the trends, but manage to stay ahead of them.

What are you working on now?
I have several national magazines interested in doing a story on my work, so am in the middle of designing several new pieces for that.  I also have several shoots coming up with some celebrities that have requested certain looks and of course I have market coming up in January for my “resale” line….so, never a dull moment in the studio!

If you were a bead, what would you be?
What a great question!!!  I would be made of rustic metal, very old, and rare.

 Any additional advice?
No matter what a person dreams of being …. I say “go for it”; it is never too late!

Kay Howard truly designs Art jewelry. She uses museum quality beads and the finished products belong in a museum too. Her necklaces aren’t simple accessories; each is a magnificent design, from which you would “accessorize” with clothing. Each masterpiece evokes confidence. Every title takes you to a foreign culture: “Four Bone Dragons”, “Olmec”, “Persia”, “Bat in Flight”, “Dzibilchaltun” (I don’t have a clue what this means but Google informs me that it is a Mexican Maya archaeological site).

Her big, bold and dramatic pieces incorporate new, vintage and antique beads: natural and organic materials, semi-precious stones and occasional touches of metal, Czech glass and one-of-a-kind recycled glass. Naturally, she pushes the limit of clasps so Kay is always on a quest for better and better clasps!

A 5th generation Texan and child of the 50′s, Kay Howard says, “I create large scaled, dramatic STATEMENT pieces. I create what I enjoy wearing. My work is for the Strong, Independent, Creative CONFIDENT Woman.”

Kay’s work is influenced by ancient cultures, current surroundings and her architecture and interior design background. With her Bachelors and a Masters Degrees in Interior Design with a minor in Architecture Kay Howard taught Interior Designer at the University of Texas at Austin and owned her own interior design practice. “Working with the Art Elements and Principles of Design or over 40 years has trained my eye to select items that relate to each other well. Texture is a BIG part of my work. I am influenced by EVERYTHING I see. With me it’s a combination of INSTINCT and DESIGN TRAINING. I use my Design Training in the selection of every single bead I select and in the composition of every necklace.”

Kay’s description of her workspace sounds all too familiar: comfy sofa, collapsible table, “HUGE bead board”, tools at her side, stashable storage units (stuffed of course). “I lay out everything on my bead board before I ever begin. That is where it is designed. When I know exactly what it is going to look like, I start constructing it. I seldom design as I go.”

“A one of a kind piece is like finding a lost treasure, waiting to be discovered by its wearer.” Each of Deborah Lee Taylor’s creations is carefully crafted with this belief in mind. She considers both the physical and metaphysical aspects in creating every piece of jewelry, resulting in genuine “Art for the Soul”. This is not just a catchy tag line for her Etsy Shop e5 Jewelry; each ring, bracelet and necklace resonates with the energy and heart Deborah pours into her work.

Deborah Lee Taylor is a happily married mother of two; she describes herself as a “Nail Artist turned Interior Decorator turned Jewelry Artist.” She mainly works with copper, combining it with other materials such as silver, brass, metal clay, stones and beads. Deborah describes her work space as, “A mess! I usually have 10 different pieces I’m working on at the same time. I think I need more table space.”

Life is Deborah’s inspiration; she is influenced by everything around her. I can just begin to imagine her day to day surroundings while perusing the titles of her art: Rain Catcher Ring, Wabi Sabi Bangle, Know Your Roots Bracelet, Elixir Cup Ring, Clarity of Thought Pendant, Shades of Gray Earrings. Deborah couples her intriguing creation titles with delicious photography. See for yourself: visit e5 Jewelry on Etsy, follow her tweets, and become a fan on Facebook.

A message from the artist:
“I feel blessed that I can create jewelry that is an expression of myself and have it resonate with others as inspiration.  We are all creative beings. If you stay true to yourself, and let go of self doubt, you will feel limitless in what you can create!”

With a history in floral design and an avid gardener, it’s no wonder that Lynn Walz creates jewelry which often emphasizes flowers and the colors of nature.  In her own words, “I learn by trying…  I keep a supply of aluminum wire on hand to create unusual designs which “sometimes” work.  I try to pay particular attention to the instructions for intricate pieces and create my own adaptations.  I believe the trick to selling jewelry is to create a piece that is both unusual and affordable.”  Lynn loves to work with recycled glass and rough slabs as well as delicate crystal, and many of her pieces include glass, wire, fabric or resin beads.  She is famous too!  In November she won the Resin Challenge contest at BeadStyle Magazine for her necklace, “Unchained Melody” – instructions are available in PDF format.  Her new leaf earrings will soon be featured in BeadStyle as well.  Her unique necklace, “Swahili Love Flower” was a winner in our Bead my Valentine Beading Contest earlier this year.  Lynn’s elaborate work space might be part of her inspiration – her talented husband has created for her a beautiful studio in their home, with all the features a jewelry designer could ask for, including handcrafted wood display racks!  Lynn teaches a beginners beading class at her local Hobby Lobby store in Horseheads, NY, as well as project classes with whimsical names such as: ‘Angel Kiss Necklace’, ‘Lariats, Lanyards and Links’, and ‘Try 5 Rings to Go’.  Her endless creativity and enthusiasm allows her to send her students home with new ideas and inspiration. If you are in her area, try to attend one of her classes, you won’t be disappointed!  Having recently visited the beach, Lynn is currently working on an oyster shell design, incorporating turquoise glass, brown pearls and wire to resemble the many treasures one might find at the waters edge.  Visit her website to see her other creations: www.gramzgems.com
